Covering more than 70% of the Earth's surface, our oceans are responsible for regulating our climate by absorbing large portions of excess carbon dioxide and heat from our atmosphere. This heat is then carried all over the globe through ocean currents regulating our weather patterns and temperatures. Our oceans also produce the majority of the earth's oxygen through photosynthesis by our lovely little microscopic marine plants, phytoplankton. Try breathing easy if we kill off all these little guys! With climate change and pollution, we are at rick of rising sea levels and temperatures along with acidification causing serious threats to all marine life and their delicate ecosystems. Our oceans also support our global economy through tourism, fisheries, and transportation. Not to mention the vast amount of people that depend on the oceans for food!
Some important ways you can help conserve these necessary resources are to practice sustainable fishing, conserve water, use less fertilizers, reduce your carbon footprint, and use less plastics.
